Repiping a home’s water supply is permitted work in the jurisdictions we serve, and it is inspected. That is a feature rather than an obstacle on a job of this size: an inspection is an independent check that the system carrying water through your walls was done correctly. A quote that treats permitting as optional should raise a question.
Two things are worth being straight about, because there is a lot of noise around this subject.
Age alone is not proof. Plenty of homes from the polybutylene era have copper. The pipe has to be identified, not assumed, and we will tell you if what you have is not poly.

The characteristic pattern is failure with little warning, often at a joint inside a wall or ceiling, which is what makes it more consequential than a slow drip somewhere visible.
It is usually grey flexible plastic pipe — sometimes silver, blue or black — around half an inch to an inch across, and it is most often visible at the water heater, at the main shutoff, or where pipes emerge under sinks. Age is a prompt, not proof: we identify it properly rather than assuming from the year the house was built.
You are not required to. The case for replacing is that failures tend to come without warning and the damage from one inside a wall usually exceeds the cost difference between planning the work and reacting to it. The case for waiting is real too if budget is the constraint. We will give you a straight read rather than a scare.
Both are sound modern choices and we install both. PEX is generally faster to run and needs fewer access openings because it flexes through joists and walls, which often makes it less disruptive in a finished house. Copper is rigid and long-proven. The right answer depends on your house and your preference, and we will talk it through rather than defaulting.
More than a repair and less than most people fear. The work needs access to the pipe routes, so there will be openings in some walls and ceilings, and water is off for parts of the job. We tell you where the openings will be and how long you will be without water before we start, not while we are doing it.
We can, and sometimes that is the right immediate call — particularly in an emergency. But patching one failure in a polybutylene system leaves the rest of the same-age pipe and the same fittings in place, which is why these repairs tend to repeat. We will be clear about which one you are buying.
